Schmerz ("pain" in German) takes its title from the sign in the window of a forlorn looking medical supply store in Vienna. This store is featured in the first clip in this looped film; other clips include a violent confrontation featured in the absurdist Jean-Luc Godard classic "Le Weekend"; An obscene gesture by the passenger on a scooter when he realized he was being filmed by the artist; A motorist running a cyclist off of the road just for fun (or maybe because he was in a hurry), also in "Weekend" and finally a man gives mockingly gives his literary agent the Nazi salute in a parking garage, as filmed by R.W. Fassbinder in "Satan's Brew", itself an homage to Antonin Artaud's Theater of Cruelty.
